Scrawl Smarter, Not Harder

3rd Nov 2025

notion image
Starting today, you might notice that Dungeon Scrawl looks a little different once you click the Update button in the bottom left.

We’re excited to roll out an easier-to-navigate interface, a handful of quality of life improvements based on community feedback, and for Dungeon Scrawl Pro subscribers: new Worldbuilding Presets that make it easier than ever to add decorative elements like roads, trees, rivers, and more to your maps.

Streamlined Navigation

We’ve made some updates to the left sidebar based on how you use Dungeon Scrawl. Instead of separate tabs for Layers, Images, and Shapes, you’ll now find a refreshed Menu that allows you to focus on the panels you need in the moment. You’ll also notice a few brand new icons (and a couple that got a glow-up).
Here’s your quick tour (top to bottom):
  • Presets: Control your map’s style and add new layers to your map
  • Images: Browse a library of assets (or upload your own) and use them to decorate your maps
  • Clipboard: Formerly “Shapes”, this is where you can save and reuse shapes you’ve drawn to be placed like stamps on any layer, in any style.
  • Textures (Pro): Add flare to your maps with overlays that give your maps a weathered, hand-drawn look.
  • Lighting (Pro): Add ambient and colored lighting effects to set the mood for your scenes.
  • Plugins: Import map files from popular generators Watabou and Donjon.
  • Export: Save your map as a .ds file or image. Pro subscribers can export in high-res or PDF, too.
  • Roll20 Connect: Sync your map to the Roll20 virtual tabletop to see changes made to your map in near real time. Or, connect finished maps directly to avoid file management and storage impact.

Managing Layers

Layers are easier than ever to manage.
Each Preset now comes with a name, and is reflected both in the Preset panel and the Layer Menu, so you don’t need to remember that “Dungeon Layer 1” is the blueish one, or that “Dungeon Layer 2” looks like hand-drawn hatching.

Speaking of the Layer Menu, it’s been promoted to a more natural spot above Layer Settings, and can be resized by dragging its bottom edge.

Hotkeys, Get Your Hotkeys!

Keyboard shortcuts can save a ton of time, but can be hard to learn. We’ve made it easier, updating the toolbar so it shows hotkeys as you hover over each tool. No more clicking… you might learn them by accident!

Introducing: World Building Presets

notion image
Dungeon Scrawl is the best tool around for drawing maps fast, but many of users spend hours, days, or even weeks fine-tuning their customized line styles, colors, and shadows to emulate effects like water on their maps.

We’ve worked with our community of Pro subscribers to develop four new World Building Presets that make adding the following as easy as clicking and dragging:
  • Roads
  • Foliage
  • Water
  • Lava
Quickly paint lush forests, rivers and moats, winding roads, or molten lava fields in no time with these new layer styles. We recommend combining them with the Path tool (set to Rough for extra texture), but the sky is the limit with the new styles.

NEW - Background Lock!

Mixing and matching layer styles is fun, until your background color changes unexpectedly. To provide you with more control, we’ve added a new Background Lock feature that can be used with any Preset, by any user.

Simply click the lock icon next to the Background layer in your Layer Menu to preserve your map’s background color when adding new layers. Unlock anytime if you want a new style to override the background.
